Coffee was introduced to Malawi around the late 19th century by English missionaries. The cultivation areas are located in the southern region of Malawi. Since this country was once a British colony, there are many coffee estates owned by colonizers.

To increase coffee production, Malawi's coffee farmers initiated cooperative models, which significantly improved coffee yields. In the 1990s, Malawi's coffee production reached 7,000 tons. Malawi's coffee cultivation is at high altitudes with abundant rainfall and sufficiently fertile soil.
