Born in Valle de Cauca, Colombia, Camilo frequently visited nearby coffee farms during his childhood, watching adults process coffee. After graduating high school, he decided to study in the United States. Following graduation, he worked as a manager at a Colombian food and beverage factory, often having opportunities to return to his homeland Colombia to purchase green coffee beans.

During this time, Camilo began contemplating why Colombian coffee often couldn't compare in quality to African and Central American varieties, with many people not considering Colombia among specialty coffee-producing countries.
