FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Typica and Bourbon Varieties

Biologically speaking, coffee varieties can be divided into Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. The main varieties consumed worldwide are Arabica and Robusta. Generally speaking, Arabica is mainly used for single-origin or specialty coffees. From the perspective of coffee culture and genetics, Bourbon and Typica are the two most important branches of Arabica coffee.

Bourbon Variety

The Bourbon variety originates from Ethiopia and is a natural mutation of Bourbon. It originally appeared on Reunion Island and was first recorded in 1947. Burundi, Rwanda, and South American regions are the main coffee-growing areas for Bourbon. Although this variety is similar to Typica, Bourbon is stronger than Typica, has higher yields, lower caffeine content, but shorter plants. It has very low disease resistance and is more susceptible to leaf rust.

Bourbon is a sub-variety that mutated from Typica. Along with Typica, it belongs to the oldest existing coffee varieties. When green fruits mature, they present a bright red color.

Typica Coffee

Typica is a sub-variety within Arabica coffee. The Typica variety originally grew on Martinique Island. Central America, Jamaica, the Kona region of Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor are currently the main coffee-growing areas for Typica. To obtain more coffee yields from high-quality Typica, Typica coffee varieties are usually cross-bred with other species. Typica coffee is famous for its sweetness, and some of the world's best coffees come from the Typica coffee variety family, including Blue Mountain, Sumatra, and Kona.
