FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Geisha Coffee Varieties
Since the year 2000, "specialty coffee" has been gaining popularity worldwide. After the concept of regional flavor (Terroir) was introduced in specialty coffee, it opened the door to thousands of flavor profiles in coffee. Coffee can no longer be described simply as "aromatic" or "bitter." In the new century, the darling of coffee is undoubtedly "Geisha"!
Geisha can be roughly described as a coffee tree species. Initially, it was not discovered for its good taste but for its strong resistance to leaf rust disease. Starting from 1860, major coffee-producing regions around the world began experiencing large-scale infections of coffee trees with leaf rust, causing vast areas of coffee trees to die from this disease. Thus, in the late 19th century, many botanists began researching how to solve this disease, known as "coffee tree cancer," and finding new coffee tree species and improving genes to increase disease resistance naturally became the most important method.
Geisha was discovered during this period. It grows in the birthplace of Arabica coffee - the Kaffa Forest in southwestern Ethiopia. Therefore, Geisha is a natural mutant of the Arabica gene, a coffee tree species with natural resistance to leaf rust disease. Since it was discovered in the Geisha area of the forest, it was named Geisha and given a number.
After entering the 21st century, light to medium roasting became a popular trend in the specialty coffee industry, and scientific extraction techniques became more mature and widespread. This led to more people beginning to appreciate the floral aromas, fruit acidity, and various flower, fruit, and nut flavors in coffee. To meet the changing market demands, green bean traders began searching through various channels for coffee tree species that could amaze consumers.
In the 2004 Panamanian green coffee selection competition, Hacienda La Esmeralda won the BOP (BEST OF PANAMA) championship with their "Geisha variety" and shocked the entire coffee industry with a price ten times higher than the average global green coffee transaction. At this point, Geisha - the sleeping beauty that traveled from Ethiopia through Kenya, Tanzania, and Costa Rica to settle in Panama from the late 19th century to the late 20th century - finally met the prince who would awaken her, blooming with astonishing beauty.
