FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Catuai Coffee Variety

Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family of plants. So far, 103 coffee varieties have been discovered, but only three main categories have commercial value and are widely cultivated: Arabica, the Robusta variant of Canephora, and Liberica.

Bourbon is a sub-species that mutated from Typica. Along with Typica, it belongs to the oldest existing coffee varieties. When green fruits ripen, they present a bright red color. Compared to Typica, Bourbon has wider leaves and grows more densely. Although its yield is higher than Typica, the harvest period is also 2 years, making it a low-yield variety. However, it offers excellent quality with a wine-like acidity and sweet aftertaste.

Bourbon varieties include: Pacamara, Caturra, Catuai, and Sarchimor. Today, let's explore Catuai.

Catuai

Catuai is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra, truly a second-generation hybrid. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's low tree height and also compensates for the fragile fruit characteristic of Arabica. The fruits are solid and not easily blown off by strong winds. Unfortunately, the beans are slightly smaller, and the overall flavor is somewhat simpler than Caturra, with sharper acidity. The most famous single-origin varieties include Costa Rican Tarrazú, as well as some production areas in Central and South America such as Panama.

Catuai also has red and yellow fruit varieties, with the red fruit being more commonly awarded than the yellow fruit. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are the four major coffee varieties in Brazil.
