FrontStreet Coffee - Mandheling Coffee Introduction

Sumatra Island is the sixth largest island in the world and the second largest island in Indonesia, after Kalimantan Island (Borneo), being one of the Greater Sunda Islands. Its economic status is second only to Java Island. Coffee cultivation in Indonesia's Sumatra Mandheling began in the 18th century, with planting areas near Lake Tawar in the northern Aceh province. Most Sumatra coffee regions are located in the southern Lindong, Sub, and Takengon areas where coffee is grown. Because the differences between Sumatra's growing regions are not significant, coffee is not distinguished by production area. Instead, harvesting and processing methods have a greater impact on the coffee's flavor.

The main coffee producing regions are Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, with Robusta varieties accounting for 90% of total production. Sumatra Mandheling, however, is the rare Arabica variety (which can now only be called a hybrid variety). These trees are planted on hillside slopes between 750 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The mysterious and unique Sumatra gives Mandheling coffee rich aroma, full body, strong flavor, and unique characteristics with subtle hints of chocolate and syrup.
