Yunnan: The Earliest Coffee Growing Area in Mainland China
In 1884, coffee was first successfully cultivated in Taiwan Province of China. In mainland China, the earliest coffee cultivation began in Yunnan.
In 1892, French missionary Father Alfred Tienne successfully planted the first coffee tree in Zhukula, Binchuan, Yunnan, for his own coffee consumption. After more than a hundred years, the high-altitude special soil, geographical environment, and climate of Yunnan have created the characteristics of Yunnan small bean coffee: rich but not bitter, fragrant but not strong, mellow and rich, with a unique fruit acidity.
New China's Yunnan Coffee Cultivation Began in 1955
For decades, Yunnan has been the leader in domestic coffee cultivation. In 1955, Yunnan agricultural reclamation workers introduced and trial-planted coffee in the state-owned Lujiang Farm and Hekou Farm, which was the starting point of Yunnan coffee after the founding of New China.
The World's Best Coffee Origin is in Yunnan
The overall quality of Yunnan coffee is superior to Brazilian coffee and similar to Colombian small bean coffee. Famous US-based news commentator Liang Houfu wrote: "The world's best coffee origin is in Yunnan. Yunnan-produced coffee is very satisfying when it touches the tongue."
Yunnan's coffee producing areas are located between 15°N and the Tropic of Cancer, with most regions at altitudes of 1000-2000 meters. The terrain is mainly mountainous and sloped, with large variations, fertile soil, abundant sunshine, plentiful rainfall, and significant temperature differences between day and night. Under these unique natural conditions, over a century, Yunnan small bean coffee has developed its special characteristics: rich but not bitter, fragrant but not strong, mellow and rich, with a unique fruit acidity.
Production Accounts for Over 99% of the Country
Information released by the Provincial Department of Agriculture shows that Yunnan's coffee planting area and production both account for over 99% of the country's total. Coffee exports rank second only to vegetables and tobacco, placing third among agricultural products in our province that earn foreign exchange. Yunnan has become an important node for global coffee giants in their布局 of the Chinese and even Asian markets.
Knowledge Point: In 1892, French missionary Father Tian successfully trial-planted coffee in Zhukula, Yunnan, and to this day, there are still 4 coffee trees there that are over 90 years old.
