FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee is the most proud quality product and cultural symbol of Jamaica, this Caribbean island nation. It is also a well-known luxury in the coffee world, hailed by coffee enthusiasts worldwide as the "Queen of Coffee."
Jamaican coffee has three grades: Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans, and Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans. Both Blue Mountain Coffee and High Mountain Coffee are further divided into two grades each. Ranked by quality from highest to lowest: NO.1, NO.2. Typically, only coffee grown at an altitude of 2,200 meters can be called Blue Mountain Coffee, and it must meet strict standards such as beans larger than 17 mesh and a defect rate below 3% to be classified as NO.1. This is why Blue Mountain Coffee commands several times higher prices than other Jamaican coffees in the international market. Coffee grown between altitudes of 274 to 457 meters is typically called Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans.
Blue Mountain is located in the coffee belt, with its highest peak reaching 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region. It boasts fertile volcanic soil, fresh air free from pollution, and a humid climate. The abundant rainfall, year-round fog, and low temperatures in the Blue Mountain area, with an average temperature of about 20°C, all contribute to the excellent growing conditions for Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee grown in this natural environment possesses all the characteristics of fine coffee - not only is it rich and mellow in flavor, but due to the perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, it has no bitter taste at all, only moderate and perfect acidity.
Typica sounds strong and mighty, but in reality, it's not that resilient... It has a relatively weak constitution, poor disease resistance, is susceptible to leaf rust, and produces low yields. It is one of Ethiopia's oldest native varieties, and many Arabica varieties are derived from Typica!
One characteristic of Typica is its bronze-colored young leaves. The beans are larger, forming pointed elliptical or slender pointed shapes. Well-known varieties like Mandheling, Blue Mountain, Elephant Bean, Kona, Yunnan Peaberry... are all derived from Typica.
Knowledge point: For high-altitude Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, High Mountain Coffee, and Jamaican Coffee, different grades determine different prices.
