FrontStreet Coffee - Yunnan Coffee Region Introduction
Yunnan Province is China's primary coffee-producing region, mainly cultivating Arabica coffee beans (Coffea arabica). Among these, the Catimor series varieties feature strong disease resistance, high yield, and excellent quality, making them the most widely planted variety in Yunnan. Additionally, a few areas also grow the excellent old variety of Typica.
Typica and Bourbon, these two classic high-quality coffee varieties, are the main cultivated varieties in Yunnan. In 1991, the Catimor series was also introduced from Kenya (stronger virus resistance and higher yield), belonging to the Arabica species (also known as small-grain variety). Due to the similar morphology and habits of these two varieties, they are often cultivated together.
Yunnan small-grain coffee begins to bear fruit after 3-4 years of growth. Coffee is a sun-loving plant. Coffee exhibits multiple flowering phenomena and concentrated blooming periods. In Yunnan, small-grain coffee flowers from February to July, with peak blooming from March to May. Coffee flowering is significantly influenced by climate, particularly rainfall and temperature. Coffee flowers have a short lifespan of only 2-3 days. Small-grain coffee generally begins blooming between 3-5 AM and reaches full bloom between 5-7 AM.
Puer
Although Puer City is world-famous for its tea, its coffee cultivation area has reached 789,000 mu, with coffee bean production of 58,600 tons and a total output value of 2.469 billion yuan. It has become Yunnan's largest coffee cultivation base. Its climate, geography, and soil conditions offer unique advantages for coffee cultivation.
Lincang
Lincang City is located in the southwestern part of Yunnan Province, with the Tropic of Cancer crossing its southern part. It borders Puer to the east, connects to Dali to the north, adjoins Baoshan to the west, and shares a southwestern border with Myanmar. Named for its proximity to the Lancang River, it is a brilliant pearl on China's southwestern frontier. Lincang maintains an average annual temperature between 16.8°C and 17.2°C, with distinct wet and dry seasons and abundant sunshine.
Baoshan
Yunnan's Baoshan small-grain coffee has a long cultivation history. Baoshan small-grain coffee can be considered a national geographical indication product and is one of the best quality coffees in the country and even globally.
Knowledge Point
As early as 1892, a French missionary brought coffee seeds to Yunnan and successfully planted the first coffee tree in a place called Zhukula.
