FrontStreet Coffee - Robusta Coffee Bean Introduction
Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia with a tropical and subtropical climate. The climate is divided into three major regions: northern subtropical humid climate, central and southern tropical monsoon climate, and central and southern tropical savanna. Annual rainfall ranges from 1200mm to 3000mm, with temperatures between 5°C from December to January and reaching 37°C from April to May. Seasonal divisions are more pronounced in the northern part of the country than in the south.
Production Regions
Southern Vietnam has a humid tropical climate suitable for growing ROBUSTA coffee, while the north is suitable for growing ARABICA coffee. Robusta continues to be cultivated in four provinces of the Central Highlands (Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Dak Nong, and Gia Lai) covering a total area of 530,000 hectares, with approximately 70,000 hectares in other provinces. Arabica cultivation has been supported including Son La (northwest Vietnam), Nghe An, Quang Son (central provinces), and Lam Dong (Central Highlands) as well as other central regions suitable for Arabica varieties.
Vietnam's coffee cultivation occurs in regions between 500 and 1200 meters above sea level.
The main Robusta varieties cultivated in Vietnam originate from Java Island, Indonesia. There are now two main types of Robusta varieties grown in Vietnam. One type is the original small-bean Robusta variety, which has excellent quality but limited cultivation area due to low yield and weak disease resistance. The second type consists of so-called high-yield varieties.
Among Arabica coffee grown in Vietnam, approximately 99% is the Catimor variety. Over the past 20 years, Vietnamese researchers have also conducted hybridization and grafting with Robusta varieties simultaneously to produce various new Arabica varieties. These new varieties all have names beginning with THA or TN. These new varieties can adapt to local soil and climate, have high yields, and enhanced resistance to pests and diseases.
Knowledge Point
Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family. To date, 103 coffee varieties have been discovered, but only three major categories have commercial value and are widely cultivated.
