FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombia's Huila Region San Augustin

Huila is an exceptionally important coffee-producing region within Colombia. Coffee grows on the valley slopes formed at the junction of the western coastal mountain range and the eastern mountain range. Among these, San Augustin boasts the highest production value due to the presence of Los Naranjos (Orange River). The fertile volcanic soil and humid climate once nurtured the "San Augustin Culture," making this area a renowned coffee-producing region. This riverside area features beautiful landscapes with vast lavender fields that serve as habitats for butterflies and hummingbirds. It is also an ancient, mysterious place in Colombia known for its giant stone carvings and formations, where local people protect the land from destruction.

San Augustin is located in the southernmost part of the Huila region and is famous for producing the highest quality coffee. With abundant groundwater, fertile volcanic ash soil, and suitable altitude, farms in this region average 2 hectares in size, representing small-scale cultivation. Coffee is grown under shade conditions, hand-picked, and primarily processed using the natural (sun-dried) method. The main varieties include Caturra and Typica. The flavor profile is balanced with mild acidity, excellent nutty aroma, and rich body.

San Augustin coffee produced by the Condor Cooperative sources from local small-scale coffee farmers. To maintain excellent coffee flavor, they exclusively grow traditional Typica varieties, dedicated to producing specialty coffee with unique flavor and outstanding quality. The coffee is processed using the washed method, then undergoes meticulous processing and strict quality control screening to become the highest grade SUPREMO for export. It consistently achieves excellent results in COE (Cup of Excellence) competitions and notably stood out among 100 coffee samples at the 2009 SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) annual conference, earning recognition as the Coffee of the Year (SCAA COTY Winner).
