Coffee trees themselves are not divided into male and female trees. Coffee flowers are plants that have both male and female reproductive organs, which means that even if there were only one coffee tree in the world, it could still produce coffee fruits.

Since they are hermaphroditic, there is no distinction between male and female. Coffee trees cannot be considered male or female, and naturally, coffee beans cannot be said to have gender either. However, friends who have been to Indonesia know that Indonesians classify and sell coffee beans as male beans and female beans. So what's going on here?

Most coffee farmers don't particularly value so-called male beans and won't specially select them for sale. Moreover, if you don't witness or experience this firsthand at the origin, it's really difficult to notice this difference. To actually understand coffee gender, you can only distinguish male from female beans by opening the fruit on-site during the annual coffee maturation period and examining the shape of the beans.

Male beans are a variety of coffee bean, mainly referring to Peaberry or Tanzania Peaberry, also known as small round beans, while "male beans" is just a common Chinese term. Botanically, male beans can be considered a defect, with several possible causes: one is insect damage before the coffee forms fruit, another could be factors like prolonged drought or nutritional imbalance affecting the coffee tree, or coffee beans growing at the end of coffee tree branches might also exhibit this phenomenon.

Regular coffee beans have two halves, but male beans have only one half, earning them the name "single beans." One half absorbs more nutrients, making the coffee beans fuller in color and shape. When brewed, they produce continuous aromatic coffee fragrance. Due to their relatively small quantity, they are known as "dream coffee."

Male beans are slightly smaller in size and oval-shaped. Female beans are larger than male beans and have a semi-oval appearance. Female bean coffee has a slightly bitter and sour taste with a rich coffee flavor, while male beans offer a mellow aroma without acidic or astringent notes, making them most suitable for those who prefer black coffee flavors. On a single coffee tree, male bean production accounts for only 5-10% of the total yield.

The concept of male and female coffee beans originated in Indonesia, spread to Taiwan, and took root in mainland China. Its influence is mainly concentrated in these three regions, so in Bali, locals use male beans as a selling point to promote coffee. Due to their limited production and the need to manually select them from female beans, male beans are indeed quite expensive.

Knowledge Point: Pacamara is a hybrid variety discovered in El Salvador in 1950, a cross between Pacas and Maragogype.
