FrontStreet Coffee - Colombia Hacienda Esperanza Geisha Introduction
Colombia is the largest producer of Arabica coffee and the largest exporter of washed coffee. The total coffee production ranks third globally, with an annual export volume of nearly 12 million bags (60kg per bag). Colombia was the first non-EU member country to apply to the European Union for "Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)" certification.
In 2011, UNESCO declared a vast area composed of 47 municipalities across four central provinces of Colombia: Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca, as a human heritage protection site.
It is within this human heritage area that the champion estates of the 2018 and 2019 Exceptional Cup were cultivated, as well as the Geisha specialty plantation that ranked second in SCAA's Global Coffee Estate Evaluation. Today, FrontStreet Coffee's Origin Series takes everyone to visit this world-renowned human heritage in Colombia, step into the coffee cultivation history of Valle del Cauca, and visit Hacienda Esperanza, which best represents the "colonial agricultural pioneering spirit" of this world heritage region. Hacienda Esperanza in Valle del Cauca province is a specialty coffee garden that best represents the spirit of small farmers overcoming nature in Colombia's coffee colonization history. The owners of this estate, the Don Rigo brothers, once jointly created the 2008 Panama BOP champion estate "La Carleida" farm.
In 2007, the Don Rigo brothers purchased Farm No. 3: Cerro Azul (Blue Hill) on the mountains outside Trujillo town in Caucal Valley. Blue Hill is situated at the peak of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, at an altitude ranging from 1700 to 1950 meters. When cool, moist fog meets warm Pacific winds, the farm area forms a special microclimate with occasional intermittent showers. The geographical environment here is very similar to Boquete, Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda, making it the cradle where Hacienda Esperanza nurtures Colombian Geisha beans.
In 2007, Cerro Azul Estate welcomed 35,000 precious Panamanian Geisha seedlings. Although two months later, many of these seedlings died due to acclimatization issues, Don Rigo did not give up. He planted an entire windbreak forest on the mountaintop to isolate excessive sea breezes. Thanks to Don Rigo's persistence, the Panamanian Geisha that survived in 2007 at Cerro Azul Farm achieved the excellent result of second place in the 2012 Specialty Coffee Association of America's Annual World Coffee Competition during their first harvest season five years later (coffee seedlings enter formal production after five years of planting). Subsequently, it was selected as the designated competition bean for champion baristas at the 2012 and 2013 American Brewers Cup, and also became the competition bean for the runner-up in the 2014 World Barista Championship (WBC). From then on, the reputation of Cerro Azul Geisha beans grew dramatically.
Knowledge Extension: Las Margaritas
Las Margaritas is an Arabica coffee rare variety breeding and experimental center in Valle del Cauca, specially established by Hacienda Esperanza's inheriting family to carry on their adventurous experimental spirit.
