The Maracaturra Coffee Variety

Among Arabica coffee species, there are hundreds of subspecies we call varieties, each possessing unique qualities in flavor, size, color, productivity, and disease resistance. Maracaturra is a hybrid variety that combines Caturra, known for its productivity and balanced flavor, with "Elephant Bean" (Maragogype), renowned for its premium coffee quality. This variety is commonly found in the coffee growing regions of Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Elephant Bean (Maragogype)

Elephant Bean (Maragogype, also known as Maragogipe) has a soft texture and extra-large particles, making it the world's largest. It was first discovered in 1870 in the Maragogype region of Bahia state in northeastern Brazil, hence its name. The flavor of Elephant Bean is relatively mild, but it can exhibit better flavor characteristics when grown at elevations above 1,000 meters. It is suitable for medium roasting but not for dark roasting.

Caturra Variety

Caturra is a natural variant of the Arabica Bourbon variety, discovered in Brazil in 1937. It features high yield, excellent quality, and leaf rust resistance, though cultivation costs are relatively high. Although discovered in Brazil, Caturra is not well-suited for growing there, so it was not cultivated on a large scale in Brazil. Instead, it became widely popular in Central and South America, with extensive cultivation in countries like Colombia, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

The Birth of Maracaturra

When Maragogype and Caturra were crossbred, today's subject was born—a bean with complex flavors and large particles known as Maracaturra.

Unique Characteristics

Some coffee varieties are naturally endowed with higher body. For example, FrontStreet Coffee's Nicaraguan Maracaturra (Maracaturra: a hybrid of Elephant Bean Maragogype and Caturra, with particle size similar to Elephant Bean, capable of growing up to 22 mesh) features orange flavors, sweet almond nuances as it cools, caramel notes, and a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel.
