Malawi: The Land of Rare Geisha Coffee

The Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern East Africa, bordered to the north by Tanzania and to the west by Zambia. Separated by Lake Malawi (the third largest lake in Africa), it connects to Mozambique in the east. Malawi has a population of approximately 12.5 million people. The Malawi Geisha variety is primarily cultivated in the high-altitude Misuku growing region.

The Geisha Variety

Geisha beans are one of the varieties of wild Arabica beans, with a long history and considerable rarity. The variety name originates from the Geisha Forest. In recent years, it has gained popularity among many coffee enthusiasts and was once sold at the highest bid price in coffee auction history.

The Precious Nature of Geisha Beans

The preciousness of Geisha beans lies in their low yield and difficult harvest. On average, a single coffee tree produces only two kilograms of green beans, equivalent to approximately 240 cups of specialty coffee. The coffee trees can reach heights of up to 4 meters, requiring farmers to use ladders and work tirelessly to harvest the highest quality green coffee beans.

Malawi's Geography

Malawi is located in southeastern Africa and is a landlocked country without a coastline. From the northern to central parts of the country, the eastern border adjacent to Tanzania consists of a vast natural boundary formed by Lake Malawi. This lake even extends to the border with Mozambique.

The western neighboring country is Zambia. The central and southern parts of Malawi, extending from the east all the way to the west, border Mozambique.

Malawi's Coffee Industry

Malawi is also a member of the Eastern Africa Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA). At the annual SCAA exhibitions and European SCAE exhibitions, the Eastern Africa Fine Coffees Association sets up booths to promote their products, thus gradually gaining exposure.

Malawi's coffee is grown in an ecological, pesticide-free environment with rare production, making it one of the world's few high-quality coffee beans. It won first place in the cupping competition of the Japanese Coffee Association (SCAJ). Among 13 coffee beans from 4 East African inland countries sampled by the Eastern Africa Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA) for testing, Malawi coffee presented a unique sweet fruity aroma, smooth aftertaste without bitterness, and elegant flavors worth savoring carefully.

Brewing Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee suggests brewing Malawi Geisha with water at 90-92°C. The cup presents bright citrus acidity, with notes of orange, floral, ripe fruit, tangerine, berries, cantaloupe, honey, and sweet plum, with a soft acidity.
