Yunnan Small-Bean Coffee: China's Premium Coffee Origin

Yunnan small-bean coffee is one of only two domestically produced coffees in China, with the other being produced in Hainan and also having limited production. High-quality Yunnan coffee grows in high-altitude mountainous plateaus between 1200 and 1400 meters above sea level, characterized by long frost-free periods, extended growing seasons, slightly barren soil, pure air, and abundant sunshine. Coffee grown under such conditions produces full, flavorful berries with unique characteristics.

What makes Yunnan small-bean coffee distinctive is that its coffee beans are slightly smaller than typical Arabica beans, hence the name "Yunnan small-bean coffee." The coffee beans offer superior aroma and flavor. Baoshan small-bean coffee grows along the banks of the world's second-largest canyon (the Nujiang Grand Canyon). Due to the special geographical location of the hot river valley, although evaporation exceeds rainfall, during the coffee fruiting period, river mist envelops the coffee trees between evening and early morning. This results in premium coffee production: rich but not bitter, fragrant but not overpowering, with high oil content and fruity aromas.

Yunnan: China's Coffee Powerhouse

Today, Yunnan has become China's main coffee-producing region. By the end of 2015, Yunnan's actual coffee cultivation area reached 1.87 million mu, with coffee production reaching 139,000 tons, both accounting for over 99% of the national total.

Yunnan's coffee is like this - spreading its fragrance globally when you least expect it.

99% of China's Coffee Beans Come from Yunnan

In 1892, a French missionary planted a coffee bean in Zhukula Village, Dali, Yunnan. This seed nurtured coffee life and began the history of coffee cultivation in Yunnan.

Due to the unique ecological environment of coffee-growing areas, the distinctive natural conditions have formed the special characteristics of Yunnan small-bean coffee: rich but not bitter, fragrant but not overpowering, with slight fruity notes.

Today, Yunnan has become China's main coffee-producing region. By the end of 2015, Yunnan's actual coffee cultivation area reached 1.87 million mu, with coffee production reaching 139,000 tons, both accounting for over 99% of the national total.

The overall quality of Yunnan coffee is superior to Brazilian coffee and comparable to Colombian small-bean coffee. Multiple comparative tests, analyses, and studies have proven that the cup quality of Yunnan coffee beans can rival that of coffee from high-altitude regions in Central America, making it premium-quality coffee.

Coffee Cultivation Across 9 Prefectures and 35 Counties

Currently, Yunnan's coffee cultivation is mainly concentrated in 35 counties and districts across 9 prefectures and cities, including Pu'er City, Baoshan City, Dehong Prefecture, Lincang City, Wenshan Prefecture, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture. Among these, Pu'er City has been honored with the title "Coffee Capital of China."

In industrial production, Hougu Coffee has a 13,000-ton instant coffee production line in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, with a 20,000-ton instant powder production line under construction expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Additionally, Tianrun Yunchun is planning and constructing a 4,000-ton instant coffee production line in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, which will make Yunnan home to Asia's largest coffee deep-processing enterprise.

In brand development, after market baptism, Yunnan's coffee products such as Hougu, Lingfeng, Yunfei, Manya, Zhongfei, Sizhi Mao, Xinzai, Manlaojiang, and Yunlu Coffee have gradually gained market recognition.

Embracing the World, We've Arrived

Not only sold domestically, Yunnan's coffee beans are also exported in large quantities. According to statistics from the first three quarters of this year, Pu'er, Baoshan, and Dehong are the three major export sources of coffee within the province, accounting for 29.2%, 20.8%, and 11.8% of Yunnan's total coffee export value respectively.

Yunnan Coffee Industry Expands International Markets

Yunnan's coffee industry is making every effort to expand international markets and enhance global influence:

January 25, 2015 - China's specialty coffee green bean auction held its first gavel strike at the Yunnan Coffee Trading Center in Pu'er City, with the champion green beans selling at 2,600 yuan per kilogram.

July 1, 2015 - The "Dian-Xin-Ou" Hougu Coffee international freight train officially began operation. Yunnan coffee "traveled" on an international train to Europe for the first time, with 66 containers loaded with instant coffee powder, marking Yunnan's coffee industry's transition from raw material export to industrial product export.

July 16, 2015 - The first "Yu-Xin-Ou" Hougu Coffee international train departed from Tuanjie Village, Chongqing. The successive launch of the "Dian-Xin-Ou" and "Yu-Xin-Ou" international freight trains enabled Yunnan coffee to achieve parallel sea and land transport for foreign trade goods, promoting an "explosive" growth in Yunnan's coffee export trade, allowing Yunnan coffee to generate over $400 million in foreign exchange that year.

June 16, 2016 - Yunnan Dehong Hongtian Industrial (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Energy Investment Group Co., Ltd., and 7 other enterprises jointly launched the Chongqing Coffee Trading Center, which officially began operations.

August 26, 2016 - The Dian-Shanghai cooperation project "International Coffee House" unveiling ceremony was held in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. This will greatly promote the exhibition and trading of Yunnan's coffee industry nationwide and globally.

A Few More Words

In the first three quarters of this year, Yunnan Province exported 63,000 tons of coffee, a year-on-year increase of 79.3%; export value reached 1.39 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.1 times; and the average export price was 22.2 yuan per kilogram, an increase of 14.8%. Yunnan's coffee exports accounted for 56.5% of the national total, ranking first among all provinces (regions and municipalities) in China.
