According to the chairman of the Rwanda Coffee Processing and Export Association (CEPAR), coffee is a key factor for the country's sustainable development.

Founded in 2010, CEPAR supports coffee production by establishing a fertilizer fund, which was initially managed and implemented by the National Agricultural Export Board (NAEB). CEPAR has a mission to promote coffee products nationwide and has even exported 75% of the coffee produced domestically in Rwanda. The association's 20 members purchase fertilizers first and then distribute them to coffee farmers. These fertilizers help coffee farmers increase their coffee production.

● Achievements

Pierre Munyura Kamere (General Manager of Mibirizi Coffee and Food Stuffs) pointed out: The first achievement of CEPAR is that it has become an entity recognized by the federation of government and private institutions. Another achievement is the establishment of the fertilizer fund. Before this fund was established, NAEB was responsible for purchasing and distributing fertilizers. This was quite challenging because farmers might not be able to pay for fertilizers on time, and defects in the government bureaucracy would also cause delays. Since CEPAR took over the purchasing task last August, the efficiency of this process has greatly improved.

Rwanda's economy and society are continuously developing, but the growth in rural areas is not synchronized with urban areas. Coffee is one of the important factors promoting balanced economic growth.

● Increasing Productivity

The yield per coffee tree in Kenya is much higher than in Rwanda, so Munyura believes that Rwanda's coffee production has great potential for growth. Rwanda's coffee exports are much larger than domestic consumption. Currently, 98% of Rwanda's coffee is exported, while only 2% is consumed domestically. Although they have made many efforts to promote their coffee beans, the competition in the international market is still very strong.

● Challenges Faced

One of the main challenges faced by coffee processors and exporters is the instability of the international market. Price fluctuations affect sales and also impact the planning of coffee farmers and exporters.

Munyura pointed out: Increasing the coffee consumption rate of the Rwandan people is the only way to cope with this challenge. He cited Ethiopia, Brazil, and Colombia as examples, where domestic coffee consumption in these countries exceeds 50% of total production.

Munyura also said: "Increasing Rwanda's coffee production is one of the effective ways to lower coffee prices. I believe that within 2 to 3 years, Rwanda's coffee production can double." He encouraged the Rwandan people to improve the professional level of coffee cultivation and produce high-quality coffee beans.
