In many parts of the world, growers use pesticides to control coffee pest growth. Coffee grown in high-altitude areas with humid, foggy conditions is particularly susceptible to fungal infections, so growers often use pesticides for treatment. Many people believe that coffee can be called organic simply as long as no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers are used during its growth. In reality, only when certified by a third party (other than the coffee manufacturer and purchaser) can it be called organic coffee.
What is Organic Coffee?
Organic Coffee and Certified Organic Coffee are authorized by third-party organizations. During the coffee tree's growth process, no chemical materials, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, or artificial food additives are used. From soil and water quality testing, planting, cultivation, harvesting, to production, all must meet organic conditions with strictly controlled processes. It is high-quality coffee produced in harmony with nature, offering significant benefits to both health and environmental protection.
Only a very small portion of coffee in the world is truly certified organic coffee, because this certification process takes quite a long time—approximately three years. Additionally, this type of cultivation can cause coffee production to decrease by as much as 50%. Therefore, when coffee growers decide to pursue organic certification, it means beginning a time-consuming and financially demanding investment.
Characteristics of Organic Coffee
Organic coffee cultivation does not use any pesticides or other chemical agents to treat pest and disease problems or cultivation issues. Instead, natural methods are used, such as natural compost, hedging, and pruning techniques to maintain the healthy growth of coffee trees. For pest control, purely natural biological control methods are employed, such as planting protective trees and utilizing various other natural agricultural techniques to ensure the health of coffee trees. This is because the sustainability of land, water sources, and natural ecological environments is actively focused upon by organic coffee producers.
High-quality organic coffee is the masterpiece work of heaven, earth, and people—the essence of weather, soil, and dedicated care. A coffee tree needs five years to grow before it can flower and bear fruit. One pound of coffee requires approximately 4,000 coffee beans, all completely harvested by hand. The coffee fruits harvested from each coffee tree annually are only enough to produce one pound of roasted coffee beans—making it precious due to its rarity.
Reasons to Choose Organic Coffee Beans:
1. Protect the next generation: Reduce opportunities for exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and other carcinogenic chemicals.
2. Prevent soil depletion: According to the Soil Conservation Society's estimates, since the use of chemicals began and soil-nourishing plants were destroyed, soil erosion has been seven times worse than recovery.
3. Save energy: Modern farming uses more petroleum-based artificial fertilizers for planting and harvesting crops.
4. Say 'no' to chemicals: The EPA has confirmed that 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides, and 30% of insecticides are carcinogens. These substances can cause cancer and birth defects.
5. Protect farmers: Protecting farmers' health is also one of society's responsibilities. We must reduce the possibility of farmers being exposed to chemical environments. In the third world, pesticide safety receives less attention, gradually becoming a serious problem.
6. Maintain water quality: Farms using organic cultivation methods can preserve high-quality water sources for the next generation. Love our land, love our Earth! If you love drinking coffee, drink organic coffee!
