Zambia Coffee: The Emerging Gem of Specialty Coffee
Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa, surrounded by Angola, Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The best coffee from Zambia comes from the region north of the Muchinga Mountains, near the capital Lusaka. The Lupilli Estate we're featuring today is located right in this area.
Lupilli Estate has been cultivating coffee since 1982. The estate implements a rotational program to prevent coffee tree diseases. Each block undergoes a rotation where old trees are completely uprooted every 7 to 8 years, and new trees are replanted. In terms of harvesting, Lupilli Estate uses exclusively manual harvesting, picking only fully ripe red coffee cherries. Since the fruits on the same coffee tree don't mature simultaneously, during the harvest season, the fruits from a single tree require approximately 10 separate harvests to be completely gathered.
While Zambian coffee may not be as famous as Kenyan coffee, it has gradually secured its place in the specialty coffee market due to its balanced and smooth mouthfeel, rich texture, pleasant acidity, and excellent aroma and aftertaste.
