The World of Coffee Varieties
There are countless branches within coffee varieties, such as Typica, which belongs to the Arabica species among the three major native varieties.
Among the Coffea arabica series, three earlier subspecies are: Blue Mountain varietal, Typica varietal, and Bourbon varietal.
Typica Coffee: Origin and History
Today, let's discuss Typica variety. Typica coffee originated from southeastern Ethiopia and Sudan and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The early small-grain coffee planted in Yunnan, China, mainly consisted of Typica coffee and Bourbon subspecies. From a botanical perspective of coffee, Yunnan small-grain coffee shares genetic similarities and growing conditions with the world-renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona coffees.
A long time ago, a French missionary brought coffee seeds from abroad into Yunnan and successfully planted them in a valley in Binchuan County, Yunnan Province. The coffee plants propagated from these seeds still have over thirty trees flowering and fruiting in Binchuan County today.
Large-scale coffee cultivation in Yunnan began in the mid-1950s, with a cultivation area reaching 4,000 hectares at its peak.
Yunnan Coffee Growing Regions
Yunnan's suitable coffee growing areas are distributed in the southern and southwestern regions of Yunnan, including Simao, Xishuangbanna, Wenshan, Baoshan, and Dehong. By the end of 1997, the province's coffee planting area had reached 7,800 hectares. Currently, the province's planting area accounts for 70% of the national total, and production accounts for 83% of the national total. From both planting area and coffee bean production perspectives, Yunnan coffee has established its dominant position in China.
