FrontStreet Coffee - Kenya Kangocho Estate PB Peaberry Introduction
Kangocho Farm actually refers to Kangocho Factory, which is a micro wet miller factory composed of dozens of small farms. It forms a small cooperative with two other famous factories, Ndaroini and Gichathaini, and is operated and supervised by the Gikanda Cooperative Society.
This Gikanda Cooperative Union is actually the headquarters of the frequent winners in our Round Table Competition.
Kongocho is located in the Nyeri highlands. In fact, once you reach the Nyeri region, the elevation is already 1,550 meters. Therefore, altitude is not a major issue for coffee grown in this area. Instead, it is the microclimate, care during coffee growth, and meticulous post-harvest processing that determine the quality of the coffee.
According to official data, Kenya currently has 700,000 small farmers, more than 600 cooperatives, and over 3,300 estates. Typically, estates range from 2 to 20 hectares in area. However, what's more important are the 700,000 micro-small farmers who form the joint wet mills, which are the main source of good coffee. However, because there are so many small farmers, coffee cherries sent to wet mills and then transferred to cooperatives often leave only a code. Most are mixed with all batches processed on the same day. It is extremely difficult to discover truly high-quality small estate coffee, just like trying to find estate coffee in Ethiopia and Rwanda. After all, Africa is Africa, not Central and South America.
