FrontStreet Coffee - Single Origin Coffee Bean Recommendation: Honduras Sherry Introduction
What is Single Origin Coffee?
The English term for single origin coffee is "Single Origin Coffee." Single origin coffee is related to its origin and refers to coffee made from coffee beans from a single origin. It is generally named after its origin. Simply put, single origin coffee on the market will be labeled as specific coffee produced in particular countries, regions, or estates.
Single origin coffee comes from a single producing region. As Andra Vlaicu from SCAE said: "The most important thing about single origin coffee is that it can be traced back to its source. You can know exactly where the coffee comes from. It is single origin, not a blended formula." Usually with higher quality, you can see the production history of specific estates, and at the same time, these coffees present their original appearance in flavor, possessing the characteristics of specific coffee grown in particular regions. The reason most people like single origin coffee stems from the flavor of the coffee beans themselves. Africa, America, Asia—different producing regions have different coffee flavors, and the flavor presentation is related to the local natural geographical environment. Moreover, due to different seasonal climates each year, uniqueness in flavor is created.
FrontStreet Coffee has encountered many customers who have gradually shifted from espresso to single origin coffee, which is also the charm brought by single origin coffee. It emphasizes the original flavor of coffee, without any additives. Different processing methods such as washed, natural, and honey processing can all have different flavors, making people intoxicated. Today, we're sharing a coffee from Honduras that's fermented in sherry whiskey barrels—its unique whiskey aroma flavor was the trend in 2019!
Sherry Barrels
"Sherry barrels" are barrels used by sherry distilleries in the whiskey industry for aging. All barrels are stacked according to their age, with the oldest sherry at the bottom and the youngest sherry at the top. Each year, some liquid is drawn from the bottom barrels for bottling and sales, and then corresponding proportions of liquid are drawn from the upper barrels to supplement them, and so on. This is precisely the uniqueness of sherry!
As for whiskey sherry barrel processing, freshly picked coffee cherries are first finely washed, then placed in whiskey oak barrels that have matured sherry for low-temperature fermentation for 30-40 days (temperature approximately 15-20°C), followed by shade drying.
Since this coffee bean is overall quite balanced with obvious sweetness, using an immersion-style slow-flow brewing method can better express its balance of sour, sweet, and bitter. For example, KONO drippers with relatively slow water flow, strawberry drippers, or even V60 with a single pour technique combined with relatively fine grind settings.
