FrontStreet Coffee - Golden Mandheling Ice Pour Over Brewing Guide

Mandheling coffee, produced on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, is also known as "Sumatra coffee." It features very rich flavors—aromatic, bitter, and mellow—with a slight acidity, making it one of the most in-demand coffees in the world.

Mandheling coffee trees are cultivated on highland slopes between 750 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The mysterious and unique Sumatra has endowed Mandheling coffee with rich aroma, full body, and intense flavor.

Mandheling coffee beans are relatively large with hard texture. During cultivation, they are prone to defects, so after harvesting, they typically undergo strict manual selection. If the quality control process is not rigorous enough, it can easily lead to inconsistent quality. Mandheling has a strong flavor with rich mellowness and a vibrant, lively character—neither astringent nor acidic, allowing its body and bitterness to be fully expressed. Mandheling beans may appear unattractive, but coffee enthusiasts say that the less appealing Sumatra coffee beans look, the better, richer, and smoother their taste.

Indonesia's rainy season overlaps with the coffee cherry ripening season, making it difficult to dry coffee beans using the natural (dry) processing method. This led to the development of the regionally distinctive "Sumatran-style" processing method. It is precisely this production and processing approach that creates Mandheling coffee's unique flavor profile.

FrontStreet Coffee typically brews Mandheling as a hot beverage, but today let's try ice pour-over Mandheling to see what different experience it offers.

【Indonesia · Golden Mandheling】

Region: Sumatra Island, Company: PWN, Altitude: 1100-1600 meters, Variety: Typica, Processing Method: Wet-hulled

【Ice Pour Over】

Brewing parameters: Cake filter cup / 1:10 ratio / 88°C / 15g coffee grounds / Grind size BG-6W, total extraction time 1'45", yielding 196g of coffee liquid after ice removal.

Flavor notes: smoky, dark chocolate, cocoa, herbal, licorice, caramel, nutty—the overall flavor is more intense with a rich, mellow mouthfeel.

It turns out that hand-poured iced Mandheling has a more intense and mellow taste than the hot version, with very prominent herbal plant flavors. Perfect for friends who enjoy rich, bold flavors!

Knowledge Extension

Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands of various sizes. The main coffee-producing regions include Java Island, Sulawesi Island, and Sumatra Island. A significant portion of the varieties grown are Robusta, while Mandheling, also known as "Sumatra coffee," belongs to the Arabica species (with some Timor hybrid varieties). This gives most Mandheling coffee its characteristic bitter and aromatic profile, excellent body, and slight chocolate notes.
