Ethiopia, as the largest coffee-producing country in Africa, is undergoing production and marketing reforms, with its production potentially tripling within five years. In recent years, as the productivity of old trees declines, the country is replacing old trees and cutting down eliminated trees to allow new stems to sprout. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority stated that this could help increase production to 1.2-1.8 million tons by 2024, higher than the current harvest volume of 600,000 tons.
According to the authority, ancient trees account for about 60% of the 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of trees in production, with another 1.5 million hectares yet to produce coffee beans, and these lands will take approximately three to four years to begin production. A 60kg bag of coffee beans reached as high as 7.1 million bags in the past year. If new trees are put into production and cultivation in the next five years, the output will be relatively optimistic. But at the same time, climate change and its impact are long-term issues that we all must face.
The Ethiopian government, along with some non-governmental organizations and research centers, are helping implement these changes. Adugna Debela Bote, the agency's Director-General, said in a recent interview in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda: Marketing reforms are helping producers skip certain stages of the supply chain. He said this will help increase the income of farmers who currently receive about 60% of the coffee price. At the same time, he stated that under the new reforms, farmers can directly and freely export through foreign trade. Ethiopia is also actively creating awareness among farmers, which will be realized in this production year.
At the same time, Ethiopia exports most of its coffee beans to Europe and the United States, and is trying to open up new markets in Asia, especially China, South Korea, and Japan. He said that China could potentially account for half of Ethiopia's shipments.

Sidamo is located on the fertile highlands of the East African Rift Valley and is one of Ethiopia's three registered trademark coffee-producing regions, with sufficient rainfall, suitable temperatures, and fertile soil.
About 60% of the coffee beans produced here are processed through washing. Sidamo coffee is famous for its rich flavor, full body, bright acidity, as well as floral and citrus notes, quite popular among coffee enthusiasts who love fruity and aromatic coffee. This region also produces several of Ethiopia's highest-altitude coffees.
Knowledge bonus: Currently, Ethiopia still uses traditional cultivation methods: manual care of coffee trees, always adhering to the principle of not using harmful pesticides and herbicides. Instead, organic fertilizers (mainly fallen leaves, dead grass, and animal manure) are used. It enjoys the reputation of being the world's only pollution-free green organic coffee. Due to different cultivation methods, coffee can be divided into three types: forest or semi-forest coffee, garden coffee, and plantation coffee.
