Uganda: The Pearl of Africa
Uganda, located in eastern Africa, is a landlocked country bordering Kenya and Tanzania. It is situated along many great lakes, such as Lake Victoria (the largest freshwater lake in Africa), Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and Lake Kioga. The entire country sits on a plateau with an average elevation of 900 meters, and most regions have a tropical savanna climate. Ugandans are generally warm and gentle, often friendly shouting "China!" when they see us. Indeed, local security is stable, and going out at night requires little precaution, with few diseases (of course, theft still exists). Like Kenya, due to early British colonial rule, it belongs to the Commonwealth of Nations, and English is the official language. During its 18th-century rule period, it was called "the pearl of Africa" by the British Empire.
Rwenzori Mountains
The Rwenzori Mountains were formed approximately 2 million years ago. They stretch 125 kilometers along the border between Zaire and Uganda. In the local African language, "Rwenzori" means "rainmaker." Indeed, there is much rain and fog here, with mountain peaks shrouded in clouds for 300 days a year.
It seems that everything here is at least twice its normal size. Rwenzori earthworms can reach up to 1 meter in length, as thick as a human thumb. The black pigs here are giants among African wild pigs, weighing about 160 kilograms with a standing height of 1 meter to the shoulders. A plant called lobelia, commonly seen in many gardens, transforms here into 2-meter-high candle-shaped flower spikes. The mountain bamboo grows to 9-12 meters, and thatch grass reaches 1.8 meters.
The Rwenzori Mountains have the beautiful reputation of "Mountains of the Moon" and are located in western Uganda, forming the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Coffee is Uganda's main cash crop, accounting for 95% of Uganda's total exports.
The local Bukonzo people live in these mountainous areas and have been farming in this region for centuries. The mountain soil is fertile, and the climate conditions are excellent, making it very suitable for coffee cultivation.
Ugandan natural process coffee represents a return to classic flavors and embodies the high quality of African coffee beans. The intense aroma nurtured by this soft volcanic soil truly makes one feel it's energy bestowed by nature, reaching an almost incredible level.
The Rwenzori Mountains are a mountain range on the border of Uganda and Congo, stretching about 130 kilometers from north to south with a maximum width of 50 kilometers, located between Lake Edward and Lake Albert. The peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains on the equator are snow-covered year-round, with this fantastic spectacle often obscured by dense fog.
The Maliba region mainly consists of soft volcanic soil rich in minerals, surrounded by extensive forest vegetation and water sources. This excellent and special geographical environment gives this bean an even more intense aromatic expression. Truly, this aroma seems to carry a kind of magic - it's difficult to describe it as simply a comprehensive fruit fragrance; it's just an incredibly rich and lush feeling that refreshes the soul. After grinding, it's absolutely stunning, and this aroma alone can intoxicate you, putting you in a great mood.
Brewing Recommendations
FrontStreet Coffee recommends brewing with water at 90°C, with a bloom time of about 30 seconds. When the surface of the coffee bed appears dry, it indicates the blooming phase can end. During the dry aroma phase, you'll experience very intense fruit aromas - incredibly fragrant, basically bursting from the grinder outlet. During the wet aroma phase, it becomes slightly softer, with light hints similar to citrus, plum and apricot, plus a touch of small cherry.
During the brewing process, the emitted aroma carries a hint of licorice, but the core still reveals the intricate sweet-and-sour sensation brought by the comprehensive fruits - gentle yet creating a sense of anticipation.
FrontStreet Coffee finds that this bean has an overall smooth and gentle mouthfeel. The coffee liquid is very clean and transparent, comfortable to drink, with excellent texture. Actually, the initial taste isn't bright fruit acidity, but rather gentle. However, every sip in the flavor profile is like drinking fruit juice - the texture is very assertive, full and substantial. The aftertaste sweetness is also quite good, with a slight caramel sensation.
