Angolan Coffee: A Sweet and Robust Legacy
Angolan coffee is renowned for its sweet flavor profile. What's most remarkable about Angolan coffee beans is that they are remarkably robust. Robusta beans are typically known for their strong flavor and are often used by major coffee producers as fillers for Arabica coffee beans. The grinding and blending of these two beans creates a completely sweet and smooth flavor. However, for many people, Angolan Robusta beans offer a completely sweet and smooth tasting experience without any blending. This is why before the war, Angolan beans were among the most valuable coffee beans on Earth.
In 1973, during the colonial era, Angola was Africa's largest coffee producer, with over 204,000 tons produced.
With the outbreak of the Angolan Civil War in 1975, Portuguese coffee growers abandoned their plantations, and coffee cultivation began to decline.
Thirty years later, only a few former Angolan workers still possessed the knowledge to cultivate coffee.
Additionally, the privatization of old trees, land, and the presence of landmines became significant obstacles to the continued development of coffee production.
Consequently, only 5,000 tons of coffee were produced in 2007.
Meanwhile, various projects have been implemented to promote Angola's coffee industry, including initiatives from organizations such as the International Coffee Organization and the United Nations.
Additionally, there are projects from Angolan non-governmental organization AAD, which serves as a project sponsor for the OIKOS project.
Beyond coffee infrastructure, farmers have also received support in food crop cultivation, enabling them to become self-sufficient without food aid within six months.
Therefore, Robusta coffee is once again being cultivated by small-scale farmers in Angola.
This is not monoculture, but rather part of diversified agriculture. This approach makes the plants less vulnerable, eliminating the need for fertilizers or pesticides. You could call it organic coffee.
The main growing region is the Kwanza Sul area, specifically in the town of Gabela, located in the western part of the country.
How Angola's coffee production will develop in the coming years remains to be seen, but in the meantime, Robusta enthusiasts can also enjoy it here.
